Every thing about Air Pollution that you should know

Air Pollution

Do you know ?

Air pollution causes around seven million deaths a year worldwide.

What Causes Air Pollution?

  • Air pollution refers to the release of pollutants into the air that are harmful to human health

  •  Air pollution can result from both natural and human actions

What Causes Air Pollution?

Main causes of air pollution

Emissions from different transport modes, the burning of fossil fuels, industrial production, forest fires, aerosol use and radiation fare some of the main causes of air pollution

There are many causes for air pollution.

1. The Burning of Fossil Fuels

Sulfur dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum for energy in power plants, and other factory combustibles is one the major cause of air pollution.

Billions of vehicles run on roads are powered by petrol and diesel engines that burn petroleum for releasing energy this produce smoke which pollute air

2. Exhaust From Factories and Industries

Manufacturing industries release a large amount of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and chemicals into the air which decrease quality of air

3. Mining Operations

During the mining, dust and chemicals are released in the air causing massive air pollution.

4. Natural Events

There are certain natural events such as volcanoes, forest fires, and dust storms, which cause air pollution.

5.Deforestation

Deforestation affects the atmosphere in more than a few ways. Forests act as sponges for carbon dioxide through a process called carbon sequestration. Trees amass carbon dioxide in their plant tissue as they take in this gas to undertake food-making. In effect, this action gets rid of carbon dioxide from the air. When forests are burned and destroyed on purpose and to tremendous extents, this storage area for carbon dioxide is removed, thus increasing the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Effects of Air Pollution

1. Depletion of the Ozone Layer

Earth’s ozone layer is depleting due to the presence of chlorofluorocarbons, hydro chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere.

As the ozone layer becomes thin, it will emit harmful rays back on earth and can cause skin and eye-related problems.

2.Global Warming

Probably global warming is one of the most worrying effects for scientists and environmentalists. Global warming is a direct consequence of the greenhouse effect, which is produced by the high emission of CO2 and methane into the atmosphere

Due to global warming the mass of the poles is melting, and this is leading to flooding and the rising of sea levels.

3.Acid Rain

The gases emitted by industries, power plants, boilers, heating and transport are very toxic. Acid rain results when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides  are emitted into the atmosphere and transported by wind and air currents. those substances accumulate in the atmosphere and react with water, they form dilute solutions of nitric and sulphuric acid, and  when those concentrations become rain, both the environment and surfaces suffer.

The major sources of SO2  in the atmosphere are:

  • Burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity.  Two thirds of SO2 and one fourth of NOX in the atmosphere come from electric power generators.
  • Vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Manufacturing, oil refineries and other industries

Climate Change

Climate Change is another consequence of global warming.

When the temperature of the planet increases, there is a disturbance in the usual climatic cycles, accelerating the changes of these cycles in an evident way.

Respiratory health problems

It is probably one of the most obvious and worrying effects for human beings. Pollutants can cause respiratory illnesses and allergies
